3 Things to Do Before You Get a Perm

Perms have come a long way since the big hair of the 80s and early 90s. Modern perms are a gorgeous way to give those born with stick straight hair a little bit of body and wave.

But before you schedule your appointment, there are a few things that you need to think about. Remember, a perm is short for "permanent" so this is not a hair decision to take lightly (like the time you got bangs on a whim).

Here are three things you need to consider before you get a perm:

Your Hair Should be in Good Condition

Just like many other hair treatments, when you get a perm, your hair should be in pretty good condition for the curls to really look like they're supposed to. If your hair has been treated, colored, or is extremely dry, then it might be a good idea to skip the perm appointment and wait until your hair has regained some strength.

A Perm Might Not Look the Best on Short Hair

If you have short or layered hair, a perm may not turn out the way you think it might. A perm will really dry out your hair, leaving your short layers looking a bit like a wet noodle instead of the gorgeous, bouncy curls you might have been envisioning. It's best to wait until your hair has grown out a couple of inches above your shoulders before getting a perm.

A Perm is a Big Commitment

Curls from a perm are so adorable and give you a completely different look, but they are also a LOT of work to keep that way. Because your hair has been so damaged and dried out from the chemicals in a perm, you need to nourish your hair with some much-needed protein treatments. You'll need to do regular deep conditioning treatments to keep your hair from drying out and get regular trims to keep it from looking too messy.

In other words, getting a perm is a pretty big commitment and you should be aware of that before your stylist starts applying the chemicals.

When Done Right, It Looks Gorgeous

Even though there might be a few things to consider before getting a perm, the payoff can be big. It truly is one of the most effective ways to switch up your look and get the hair you've always wanted.
