Taking a trip to the salon for a professional waxing session isn't exactly everyone's idea of a relaxing experience, but when you want all of your unwanted hair gone, it's a better alternative to shaving or other home hair removal techniques.

Whether you've been getting your eyebrows waxed for years or if you've never had a professional waxing before, there are certain things you need to know about waxing—every nitty gritty little details.

Here's what you need to know about waxing before you make your next appointment.

Yes, It Will Hurt—but Only Slightly

Of course, everyone's pain tolerance is different, but getting a wax isn't going to be like spending a day at the spa getting a massage. However, your waxing professional should be quick and clean, which shouldn't leave you in too much pain. Expect a slight sting, but nothing much more severe than that.

If you ever experience severe pain during a waxing appointment, be sure to notify your salon professional immediately.

No, Your Hair Won't Grow Back Thicker

It's an old wive's tale that waxing can somehow stimulate the hair follicles into growing back thicker and faster, but that's simply not true. In fact, you shouldn't be surprised if it stunts the regrowth of your hair (which is why we're all cursing ourselves now for our overly waxed brows in the early 00's).

Make the Irritation Go Away with Aloe Gel

There's no need to hide away from the rest of the world the day of your waxing appointment. Yes, your skin may get a little irritated after the waxing, but you can help the swelling and irritation go down with some aloe gel and hydrocortisone.

Waxing is Not the Same Thing as Sugaring

There are a LOT of hair removal techniques—and we use everything from shaving to laser hair removal to get rid of our unwanted hair. So it's not surprising that when we get to the salon that we'll have a menu of options that can get really confusing. One of the main hair removal techniques people get confused about is waxing and sugaring. Although they're somewhat similar, they are not the same process.

Waxing is when you use a warm resin base and then remove hair by the root. Sugaring is when you apply a sugar and lemon mix on the skin that actually removes the hair upon application.
